Petar Stoyanov was the second democratically elected President of the Republic of Bulgaria. He was born in 1952. In 1976 he graduated from the Faculty of Law at the "St. Clement of Ohrid" Sofia University. From 1977 till 1992 he worked as a civil and commercial litigation lawyer in his native town of Plovdiv. Petar Stoyanov is one of the founders of the United Democratic Forces in Plovdiv and the first spokesman of the “blue party” in the city.
Petar Stoyanov was deputy minister of justice (1991-1992). From 1994 till 1997 he was MP and deputy-chairman of the UDF Parliamentary group.
Petar Stoyanov was the first presidential candidate who placed Bulgaria's NATO and EU membership in the focus of his election campaign. On November 3, 1996 he was elected President of the Republic of Bulgaria by 2,502,517 votes or 59,73%.
